Meet Lena-Katharina Gerdes, Managing Director and Founding Partner of Xinfinity.

Born in Seoul, South Korea and raised in Switzerland, Lena-Katharina brings an international perspective to her work with extensive experience in sustainable finance and sustainable business model transformation.
​
Lena-Katharina started her career at Commerzbank London, where she helped establish the equity research team for German small and mid-caps. Later, she moved on to Eraneos AG (formerly AWK Group), where she was responsible for the Sustainable Finance and Business Model Transformation function at group level. Her work focused on sustainability processes and procedures, regulatory change, strategy, and project management in the financial services sector.

Her undergraduate studies in International Relations and Economics at the University of Reading have provided her with a profound understanding of international politics and policy advisory, which she combines with her practical expertise in financial markets and economics. This unique blend of skills allows her to navigate the complex intersection of sustainability, economics, and policy, making her an expert in the field of sustainable finance and decarbonisation consulting.

Lena-Katharina holds an MSc in Economics and Strategy for Business from Imperial College London, where she also worked as a research assistant at the Centre for Climate Finance &Investment, contributing as an author and editor to the report series "Energy Investing" in collaboration with the International Energy Agency (IEA). She currently holds an Honorary Practice Associate position at the centre.

In October 2022, Lena-Katharina co-published a proof-of-concept study on sustainable innovation pathways with a focus on the UK's 2050 net zero strategy. This further resulted in the forming of the Joint Venture “SIP Labs”, focusing on leveraging innovation technologies to enable decarbonisation targets on an industry and national level.

Meet Jürgen B. Gerdes (Dipl.-Ing.), Co-Founding Partner of Xinfinity.
Jürgen B. Gerdes has charted his career across the global seas, accruing over three decades of experience in vessel management, sustainability strategies, and business development within the maritime sector. Born with a compass in hand, he has steered through technical challenges, regulatory frameworks, and commercial ventures, ensuring safe and sustainable voyages.
Launching his career with a solid foundation in ship operation technology from Hochschule Bremerhaven, Jürgen quickly ascended to leadership positions where his capacity to manage complex technical operations and multi-cultural teams became evident. His tenure at Wärtsilä Corporation honed his skills in strategic account management and energy efficiency, particularly with two-stroke engine powered vessels, yielding significant sales growth and innovative product development. His career at Wärtsilä Corporation was marked by achievements that include the establishment of the Global Account Management team and pioneering retrofit products that substantially increased sales volume.
As an Executive Leader, Jürgen’s proficiency in driving change management is well recognised. At Maritime Business & Consulting UG(hb), he has been pivotal in transforming maritime products and services, introducing the industry's first containerized Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) retrofit for Maersk Line and developing demand-based energy-saving solutions.
His earlier mandate as a Senior Project Manager with Rickmers Shipmanagement in Hamburg saw him conceptualising a sales and marketing strategy that significantly expanded their shipmanagement services. Similarly, at Interschalt Maritime Services, he was instrumental in developing vessel compliance and performance management software that revolutionised fleet management systems. Jürgen’s impact at Lloyd’s Register as the Marine Business Director for Central & Eastern Europe included substantial growth in Gross Tonnage Volume and the strategic development of classification services. His strategic foresight and negotiation prowess were evident at SkySails GmbH, where he was a driving force in marketing ship performance management products, securing key international deals.
At LoGe Shipmanagement GmbH, he managed the company including nautical and technical operations of coastal vessels, reinforcing his expertise in efficient short sea operations.
An MSc in Ship Operation Technology and Executive courses from reputable institutions have armed Jürgen with a deep understanding of the maritime industry, complemented by certifications that include a Chief Engineer Officer competency. His strategic account management and senior leadership training, encompassing international business and change management, have refined his approach to driving industry evolution. His latest training completed MIT Sloan + CSAIL Artificial Intelligence: Implications for Business Strategy Program.
Fluent in German and English, Jürgen is a navigator not just of ships but of the complex waters of international maritime business, where he applies his vast expertise to promote sustainable practices and spearhead innovative solutions. His visionary approach is evident in his leadership style, fostering environments that thrive on collaboration and collective success towards a sustainable maritime value chain.
